EDUCATION AND AWARENESS PROGRAMME
The Education and Awareness Programme is a vital part of the community aspect in Relay for Life Donegal.
In 2016, we introduced a new Module for schools to participate in. The module has 3 different headings: Research, Awareness and Fundraising. These 3 modules will be undertaken as part of a 13 hour study programme. On completion of the programme, we will issue a Certificate and Lapel Badge to each student.
The programme was designed in conjunction with and piloted by two Donegal schools (Loreto Letterkenny and Mulroy College, Milford). Following the programme, the feedback from both students and teachers has been very positive and we are extremely grateful to both schools for their support.
Relay for Life Donegal believe that engaging students in the Education and Awareness Programme gives them an opportunity to educate themselves and others about cancer prevention. Furthermore, we can achieve this by focusing on the positive impact that healthy lifestyle choices can have on reducing the risk of cancer. These include quitting smoking, increasing physical activity levels and maintaining a healthy diet.
Cancer education is essential at the secondary school level. The healthy habits students learn early in life will stay with them as they grow into adulthood. As a result, these good habits will help them reduce their risk of serious disease, including cancer. Also, it provides students and their peers with an outstanding character-building experience as they become part of Ireland’s largest movement to end cancer.
